Karmel Mayerling reopens daily from 15 May 2020 and the following summer opening hours apply: 09.00 a.m. -5.30 pm, last entry 5.00 p.m. We kindly request visitors wear masks and observe social distancing rules. Guided tours for groups are not possible at this time, however the exhibition has been designed in a way that you can enjoy an enriching experience as a visitor. Former hunting lodge of Crown Prince Rudolph

Karmel Mayerling is the former hunting lodge of Crown Prince Rudolf and the original setting of the bloody tragedy of the 30th January 1889. Following the tragedy, Emperor Franz Josef I. immediately converted the hunting lodge in a Karmelite monastery. The church of Karmel Mayerling is located on the exact spot where the deaths took place and Crown Prince Rudolf and his lover Mary Freiin Vetsera died.

The Karmelites live a secret life. Their way of life is supported by income from tours. On a tour, you will visit the beautiful church, the Elisabeth chapel and a number of display rooms with the royal monastery chalice with the violated ceremonial sarcophagus of Mary Vetsera and a tableau of the tragedy of Mayerling. Guided tours for groups of 15 people can be arranged at any time with prior notice. We only provide tours in German, however there is an option for translation.
